Cambridge United

The club was founded in 1912 as Abbey United, swapping Abbey for Cambridge in 1951. In those days, Cambridge City were big rivals in the Southern League.

United were elected to the Football League in 1970, replacing Bradford (Park Avenue). Big Ron Atkinson was appointed manager and (almost) led his team to successive promotions which took them into the Second Division in 1978. He’d departed for West Bromwich Albion in the January.

Successive relegations followed before the early 1990s, the U’s most successful period. Finishing 5th in the Second Division, John Beck’s men just failed in their bid to become founder members of the Premier League.

The Conference beckoned in 2005 and nine years later, the club returned to the Football League.

A proper rollercoaster!
